Phileas J. Fogg Esq has taken residence down a lane in Mayfair and cordially invites you to attend his humble abode...
One evening last week, a friend and I were lucky enough to get our name on the list of a preview event at Mr Fogg's. Though early days, the place already runs like a well oiled (time) machine. Customer service was at it's best (something London isn't quite known for) with the decor and lovely cocktails leaving you in awe. With every detail thought of, this is going to be one of those bars people will make an effort to go to. Importantly, the charm doesn't wear off after the first visit and if anything, leaves you wanting to bring all your friends back again.
Wandering down a somewhat dodgy lane in Mayfair, you round the corner to a Victorian fronted residence with a glowing lantern. At the steps you find a door man in appropriate uniform who kindly asks if he is able to assist you. Opening the door as a true Gentleman, you are met within by another man in a bell hop uniform who politely discards you of your coat in exchange for a luggage tag.
Opening before you is a magical world of travel souvenirs, trinkets and accessories. From the very hot air balloon Mr Fogg traveled in to penny farthings, bird cages, animal heads, gramophone in the corner, globes and numerous books and maps you're not quite sure where to look first. You can take residence at the beautiful bar or take your place at a number of comfortable settees, rocking chairs, velvet ottomans or even an elephant foot stool. Staff are attentive and forever in character so as you're never left without a drink for long or feeling slighted that Mr Fogg is not around to welcome you personally.
On the night, we were treated to a couple of variations cocktails (2 of the numerous available on the menu) - the Sour Bulleit (most like a Whisky Sour) and the Henrietta (a pink fruity concoction with an amazing balance of sweet and sour). The Mixologist and Bar Men clearly know what they are doing and at £10 a pop you're more than willing to have more than just the one... Cocktails not your thing? Bubbly and foreign beers are also available.
Should hunger pangs begin, there are a number of grilled sandwiches available for light snacking to tie you over. We were able to taste test the smoked salmon/cream cheese, salt beef/mustard/pickle and the roasted vegetables and though all rather simple combinations, were incredibly tasty and satisfying. The salted peanuts and Bombay mix was a thoughtful surprise as the night went on.
Over 2 hours later and a number of cocktails enjoyed, being assisted into our coats was the final perfect touch to a good night out.
Pay Mr Fogg a visit. Bring your friends or bring a date but either which way you won't regret it. If nothing else, the bathrooms are a sight to behold!
